Neighbors living in fear at SE Houston apartment
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Police believe two men shot to death at a southeast Houston apartment complex were boxed in by four vehicles in an apparent ambush.
According to Houston police, a call of the shooting came in at about noon Thursday in the 8400 block of Broadway, just south of Bellfort.
ABC13 learned later that the property, along with two other properties on that same street, are owned by State Rep. Gary Gates.
Police said the victims - Black males, one in his early 20s and the other in his early 30s - were inside a parked vehicle when they became boxed in.
A large group of males approached the vehicle and opened fire, police said.
Police located multiple shell casings around the vehicle. They also recovered a gun from the scene.
The victims' identities have not yet been released.
Shortly after the shooting, investigators interviewed people nearby who have similar vehicles described to police in the shooting. No one has been arrested yet.
Several neighbors did say they live in a constant fear and are rattled by the gunshots.
A family who said they are trying to raise a young son in this environment said it's scary.
"We love living here, but I don't like being afraid that my 3-year-old is going to get shot in his house at night," the family said. "We wake up in the middle of the night now with gunshots. They don't seem to be concerned with what's going on over there and it's getting worse."
The shooting marks the latest reported act of gun violence in Houston resulting in deaths.
ABC13 also looked at 911 calls to HPD. There were more than 700 calls to those properties owned by Gates in the last year.
We reached out to Gates for a comment but have not heard back.
Just this past weekend, Mayor Sylvester Turner offered words of caution in the wake of the onslaught of gun deaths, advising Houstonians to "assume everybody's carrying a gun these days."
"If you start with that (thought), I think you'd be very careful," Turner said. "If, for example, you're driving on the street, don't get into any road rage. If somebody bumps you in the wrong way, be careful about getting into an argument with them."
