Funeral held Friday for beloved 'Courthouse Candy Man'

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- For years, Rick Johnson would greet everyone who entered the downtown Harris County Criminal Courthouse with a smile. On Friday, those who knew Johnson smiled through the pain at his funeral as they remembered the man who never hesitated to deliver sweet moments while shouting, "Don't worry, be happy."

Johnson, also known as the 'Courthouse Candy Man,' was laid to rest on Friday. His funeral was held at St. Johns United Methodist Church.

For more than a decade, Johnson brought love, laughter and candy to the Harris County Criminal Justice Center.

However, one day, Johnson vanished, and attorneys became concerned. They later learned he was battling colon cancer and set up a GoFundMe account to help with his home care.

Eyewitness News talked to Johnson just a few days before his death, and he said he was overwhelmed by the support.

"I ain't through crying. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. Never in a million years did I think I affect so many people," Johnson said. "Don't worry. Be happy. Be happy. Don't worry. Jesus has your back."

"Is that your motto?" Reporter Steve Campion asked.

"Till the day I die. Till the day I die," Johnson said.

Last week, Johnson lost his battle with cancer. He was 59 years old. His remains were cremated after the funeral service.
