HOUSTON (KTRK) -- David G. Burnet Elementary School was full of smiles when more than 500 students received early Christmas gifts.

It was part of Houston Young Lawyers Association's annual Adopt-an-Angel program in which lawyers and businesses teamed up to bring holiday magic to thousands of children in the area.

Several early childhood centers, elementary schools and private charities were chosen to participate in the program.

"When they chose us, it just lightened my heart. These kids deserve so much," Burnet Elementary School Principal Ana Cantu said.

Cantu, school staff and members of the lawyers association unloaded hundreds of gifts from trucks Thursday morning. Then, they called each class to line up and receive their bag of presents. And to add even more holiday cheer, Santa and Mrs. Claus were there.

Each student wrote their own wish list, which was given to the attorneys and businesses so that they could go out and buy exactly what they kids wanted. The children received bikes, Disney toys, Ninja turtles and so much more.

"It's a blessing. We are overjoyed," Burnet Elementary Parent Engagement representative Edward Sanchez said.

Burnet Elementary is just one of two schools in the program in which the entire school population got a present.

The Adopt-an-Angel program was started more than 10 years ago as part of an effort for the Houston legal community to give back. This year, more than 2,500 children received gifts.
