15-year-old dies after he's hit by car near Waller HS
15-year-old Waller High School student was hit and killed while walking to the convenience store, authorities say.

A 15-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car near Waller High School Thursday morning.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Steven Swartz Jr. was hit while crossing Field Store Road. Authorities say Swartz had been dropped off by the school bus, and may have been going to a nearby convenience store briefly before classes.

"He basically darted from one side (of the road) to the other right in front of him, and all the other witnesses are saying the same thing," said HCSO Sgt. Dennis Castanie.

Swartz received CPR at the scene and was transported to the hospital where he later died.

The driver, who also a district employee, stayed on the scene. He was reportedly on his way to work, and was driving less than the speed limit.

"He contacted us and worked proactively with the investigators. It's just an awful, awful situation, and he's just devastated," said spokesperson Sarah Marcus.

Counselors are on hand for any students or staff who need assistance.

No charges are expected to be filed against the driver.

"He had a vision issue, but was wearing the proper glasses at the time," said Castanie. "There was no sign of impaired driving or speed. He didn't intend to hit the student. It was an accident."
