Thousands of Houston Muslims prepare for iftar celebrations Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- As hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Houston observe the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, preparations are underway for a virtual iftar celebration Saturday evening.

During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset as one of the five pillars of their faith. Traditionally during the iftar, the fast is broken with a meal before Muslims observe their daily evening prayer.

More than 50 local organizations are at work this week producing a virtual iftar, featuring religious and elected leaders including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

ABC13 will stream this year's virtual iftar program from 7-8 p.m. Saturday, which will also feature a showcase of Islamic art in celebration of Ramadan.

You can watch the event, live newscasts and in-depth reporting from ABC13 on your favorite streaming devices, like Roku, FireTV, AppleTV and Google TV. Just search "ABC13 Houston."
