Police: Man shoots uncle, arrested after SWAT situation in SE Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police say a man shot a family member, then barricaded himself inside his home for more than four hours overnight in southeast Houston on Keller St.

Juan Villanueva, 27, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Relatives say he shot his uncle, then continued to fire shots at other family members. No one else was hurt. Those family members say they got out of the house and called police.

"Everybody was asleep and we heard-I thought it was firecrackers-but it wasn't," said Rudy Villanueva, Juan's uncle.

Rudy Villanueva says his nephew tried to shoot him, but missed. He believes Juan suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after being shot two years ago during a home invasion. He has been in a wheelchair since the attack.

"A couple years ago, he was shot himself and left paralyzed," Rudy Villanueva said. "So I think he's been thinking about that and it finally got to him."

Police recovered several rifles and pistols from inside Rudy's home. He surrendered peacefully before police deployed tear gas.

"It really opened my eyes. Anything could happen anytime. He's been depressed lately. I think it's a mental thing. He just snapped tonight," Rudy said.
