HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- One person has died in a crash along the Sam Houston Parkway on the northwest side.

Houston police are investigating the wreck that happened just after 6:30 a.m. on the West Sam Houston Parkway near Kempwood.

Police say two cars were traveling south on the feeder near Hammerly when a man in an SUV veered from the right lane to the left, striking another vehicle. The driver lost control, swerving back to the right and into a parking lot where his vehicle crashed into two parked cars and caught fire.

Police say bystanders tried to pull the man from the burning Suburban, but they weren't able to save him in time. Police say J. Santos Loera, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene.
