HOUSTON (KTRK) --Matthew continues to gain strength over the Caribbean and is expected to be a major hurricane this weekend as it makes a sharp right turn toward Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba. Right now we are not concerned about Matthew impacting Texas as a trough of low pressure in the eastern Gulf is expected to scoop it up and push it into the Atlantic waters around the Bahamas.
The forecast track is still highly uncertain beyond the Caribbean, and impacts along the U.S. East Coast cannot be ruled out at this time.
We are now coming off the peak of hurricane season, which historically occurs around September 10th. In modern times, southeast Texas has not been impacted by a tropical storm or hurricane after October 15th. Hurricane season ends November 30.
