Flooding causing traffic nightmare around Addicks Reservoir

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The flooding is causing a traffic disaster around the Addicks Reservoir in West Harris County. Several main streets are closed due to high water and it could be that way for weeks. They're all along and through the reservoir.

State Highway 6 closure forces thousands of drivers to find alternate routes.

"It's been pretty crazy, there's been water everywhere," said delivery man, Chris Jones is always on the road, specifically Highway 6.

Historic flooding has closed the popular route, and all 49,000 drivers a day that use the route, need an alternate.

"Every road is like a parking lot, Clay Road, Fry Road are horrible and Highway 6 being closed is just diverting traffic to another road. It's been a headache," said Jones.

Highway 6 is closed between Clay and Park Row, but also North Eldridge Parkway from Dairy-Ashford to Clay Road. Barker-Cypress Road is impassable from Groeschke to South Parkview; in the Barker reservoir, Westheimer Parkway, from FM 1093 to South Fry Road and South Barker-Cypress Road from Westheimer Parkway to FM 1093.

We explored some alternate routes. The Grand Parkway is clear but there's still water at the FM 529 and West Road exits. Other drivers told us they used Highway 290 to Beltway 8, even took Little York to Brittmoore.

The closure is expected to last 4-6 weeks. With a little help from Mother Nature, it won't last any longer than that.

"You just have to stay positive, find another road and keep moving," said Jones.

Earlier Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a statement warning nearby residents to prepare for possible flooding on streets and maybe even homes.
