Spike in number of work zone related crash deaths in Texas

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Over the last year, Texas has seen huge jump in the number of people killed in work-zone related crashes.

TxDOT reports 146 people were killed in crashes in construction areas last year. That's up 20 percent from 2013. The biggest causes of these crashes are speed and distraction.

Most of the deaths were not construction workers, but drivers or passengers in cars.

Keep in mind, traffic fines double in work zones when workers are there
