Deadly accident spurs second crash on the Gulf Fwy
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Juan Jimenez works at a flooring store just on the Gulf Freeway near Edgebrook Drive.
The view out front of the store many days is filled with flashing lights.
He said he's seen a lot of accident.
"At least ten or 15 in the last six (to) eight months," said Juan Jimenez.
Ones just like the accident that happened right in front of the store he works at on Saturday morning.
Houston police say it all started when one car crashed. That scene lead to so-called rubber-necking, causing yet another crash.
"This black BMW was headed southbound here on the Gulf Freeway, for some reason ran straight into this light fixture," said Houston Police Sergeant Karl Harris.
The driver was killed. Officer shutdown down the Gulf Freeway feeder outbound at Airport Boulevard/College Avenue for hours. The freeway remained open. However, drivers looked at the wreck on the feeder road, caused other drivers to crash. Four cars crashed along the Gulf Freeway. HPD said one person was hurt but is expected to be okay. Sergeant Harris said distracted driving is to blame.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving takes 3,000 lives every years and causes 400,000 injuries every year.
It's something Sergeant Harris said he sees too often.
"It happens all the time actually," said Sergeant Harris.
It's the reason Jimenez said he tries to stay off the road.
"I never drive at night," said Jimenez.
