Team USA athletes stop in Houston on their way to Rio

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was a gold medal sendoff for Team USA. The last of the more than 900 athletes who came through Houston for final Olympic team processing.

"What an honor it is, it's been in a small way for all of us in the local community to touch the Olympic movement," said Janis Schmees Burke of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority.

They are athletes in their prime, ready for the final leg of an Olympic-sized journey.

Of course the athletes have heard about the issues in Rio. From Zika concerns to bad water and infrastructure problems.

But they are focused.

Like 2012 gold medalist Jordan Burroughs. "We're here to win. Regardless of the situation, the accommodations, we want to win regardless," he said during the stop at Bush Intercontinental Airport.

"I'm very honored and blessed to represent Team USA," runner Chrishuna Williams said. The track star said she has no choice about where she runs, she can only control how fast she does it. "We can't change anything. So I'm just going to make the best of it," she said with a smile.

Despite the travel warnings and the publicized shortcomings of the host country, gold medal wrestling hopeful, Adeline Gray, says none of it is a concern when she takes to the mat.

"You know, I think the media blows things a little more out of proportion than they need to be, Gray said. "Rio is going to do an awesome job protecting us and making sure that we're ready to go out there and get what we need done."

Team USA is focused, and ready to block out the distractions; primed for gold.
