HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Even in Denver, Gary Kubiak is all Houston. The 1978 St. Pius graduate has quite the cheering section still here in town, especially his former St. Pius teammates and head coach, Rene Hancock.

"He was a freshman, he was 5'9, weighed 149," said Hancock. "I heard that he was a good quarterback and we brought him into a varsity game, we put him in the 2nd half and he was 11-14 - 169 yards, and we said, maybe he can play."

Those who played football with Gary Kubiak at St. Pius are remembering their days together.

Clement "BoBo" Adams remembers when he transferred to St. Pius and meeting Kubiak.

"When I got to st. Pius, I was a quarterback myself," said Adams. "Once I saw him throw the football, I knew I was going to be a wide receiver."

Several of his other teammates said Kubiak was always a leader. Craig Boller, who played wide receiver at St. Pius remembers there was something different about Kubiak.

Those who played football with him at St. Pius are remembering those days back in the 70's.

"Oh yea, he was a coach on the field, and if he felt the line had to do something," said Boller. "If the line wasn't doing their part, he would say something. He had the ability to coach back then and look at what he is doing today. It's awesome."

Mike "Tater" Sustatia has known Kubiak since elementary school He remember Kubiak's competitiveness, from the very beginning.

Sustatia says "Gary was always good at anything, we played dodge ball, basketball, ping pong tether ball, fooseball, anything with a balls he could do."
