Photoshopped image of NFL CoverGirl with black eye goes viral
A movement to have NFL commissioner Roger Goodell resign amid the league's continuing issues with its domestic violence policy gained steam over the weekend when a CoverGirl campaign encouraging female fans to 'get their gameface on' was appropriated by supporters who Photoshopped an image of a model to give her a black eye.
CoverGirl is the NFL's official beauty partner and had launched a campaign featuring ornate makeup looks relating to each team in the league, including the Baltimore Ravens, who recently suspended running back Ray Rice following the release of a video showing him knocking his fiancee unconscious.
CoverGirl was encouraging fans to show off their looks by posting images to social media using the hashtag #gameface. But somewhere along the way, an image of the model featuring the Raven's purple winged eyeshadow was edited to include a swollen black eye. The image, shown with the caption "Get your game face on," went viral, with many posters including CoverGirl's "gameface" hashtag as well as the hashtag #goodellmustgo.
Disillusioned fans and domestic violence prevention groups want Goodell to resign over the league's handling of the Rice incident. In July, Rice initially received a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Following the initial backlash, Goodell announced a stricter policy regarding domestic violence, but came under further fire last week once video of the Rice incident was released by TMZ and then the Associated Press reported that the NFL had been sent the footage months earlier.
On Sunday, the women's rights group UltraViolet flew banners over three NFL stadiums displaying the #goodellmustgo hashtag.
CoverGirl appears to be remaining silent on the viral image. As of Monday, their website was down for maintenance. They have not posted to Facebook since Friday and while they have been active on Twitter, they have yet to mention the image.
