HOUSTON -- During the decisive third quarter stretch of the Class 6A Division II Region III championship game, one team scored consecutive touchdowns on a trick play and a jaw-dropping run by its quarterback.

It was not Manvel.

Katy pulled ahead for good when wide receiver Tony Mullins threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Grant Jackman. Garrett Doiron scrambled for a touchdown on the next drive and the Tigers eliminated the Mavericks 45-17 on Dec. 5 at NRG Stadium.

Katy won its third consecutive regional championship and is one victory from its third straight state final. The Tigers return to NRG Stadium to play Cibolo Steele or San Antonio Brandeis at 4 p.m. Dec. 13.
