The best ways you're probably not using coconut oil
A salon owner shared some of her favorite beauty recipes using coconut oil

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- While most people keep coconut oil in their kitchens, there are some great beauty reasons that make a great case for keeping it in the bathroom as well.

"Coconut oil is anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial, which makes it a really good treatment for so many things," said salon owner Rachel Gower.

Gower shared some of her favorite beauty recipes using coconut oil.

Whipped Body Butter

- 1 cup coconut oil in solid form (below 76 degrees)

- 1 teaspoon jojoba oil

- A few drops of your favorite essential oil

Put the ingredients in a bowl and use blender to blend for about 6-7 minutes until fluffy. Scoop into a glass container and store in the fridge, or if you keep your house cool enough keep it on your counter.

Makeup Remover

If you wear contacts, take them out first. Take a very small amount of coconut oil. Once it hits your hand it turns into liquid. Apply that to your skin in an upward motion.

Get the hottest washcloth you can, and hold it in front of your face to steam it. As the washcloth starts to cool off, use it to remove the oil in an upward motion, making sure that you get all of it off. After that, use your normal cleanser.

Coconut Oil Lip Gloss

- 1 teaspoon of coconut oil

- 2 teaspoons of aloe vera

- 2 teaspoons of Vaseline

Mix those together and you'll have a longer lasting, very shiny lip gloss. If you want to add a little color, mix in a bit of lipstick or other gloss. Put it in a container and it's ready to go!

Makeup Brush Cleaner

- 3 parts baby shampoo

- 1 part coconut oil

Whisk the ingredients together, then swirl each dirty brush. Rub with your fingers, then rinse well. Lay flat to dry.

Oil Pulling

One of the hottest uses of coconut oil right now is oil pulling. Swish one tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 20 minutes then spit it out. It's supposed to remove impurities and make your teeth brighter.

Homemade Moisturizing Soap

Take your favorite liquid hand soap (about 1/2 cup) and add about 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Mix it in your soap dispenser very well. Depending on the size of your dispenser you might want to double the recipe.
