Balancing history and modernization in Asian mega cities
The Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul is a beautiful embodiment of South Korean history yet it is surrounded by modern development

SEOUL, South Korea (KTRK) -- Many mega cities in Asia have to struggle with the balance of cultural identity and modernization. It is something you can see in the booming metropolis of Seoul.

The city is dynamic. It is filled with an expansive skyline and coffee shops at every corner. Among the myriad of modern architecture, there are still vestiges of the country's rich cultural heritage.

In Seoul, the Gyeongbok Palace is a beautiful embodiment of Korean architecture and history. Yet, it is surrounded by a dizzying pace of modern development.

Houston native Diane Yoo sees it as a metaphor for her cultural identity.

"I know there is a lot of westernization happening, and it's causing the culture, the first and second generation, a lot of that's clashed," says Yoo. "However the generosity and the people's hearts here and the warmth that you receive is something I want a lot of Texans that are visiting with the Mayor to know about."
