College Buys
Patricai Lopez has the latest on 'do's' and 'don't's' in college spending.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's no secret that college is expensive, especially for the incoming freshmen.

Patricia Lopez went straight to the students to get real answers for what your college freshman will need and won't need.

First, a college budget can be overwhelming so you don't want to splurge on dorm room decor.

You also don't want to buy a pricey phone or a pricey phone plan. Most colleges have WiFi hot spots throughout campus.

Another 'don't' would be on bedding. Don't buy expensive bedding. By sophomore year, students will be ready for a new set.

And don't buy a fancy new laptop or a printer.

Some things we were told to buy:

1. Discounted gift cards

2. A shower caddy

3. Spiral notebooks to take notes
