HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston Police officer is stressing the importance of doing just one good deed this holiday season, and he's leading by example.
Officer Sheldon Theragood runs a non-profit organization called Theragood Deeds. The goal: help children help others.
"I have a passion for kids, so I try to get the kids involved, you know," Theragood says, "mentoring them, guiding them."
Theragood and dozens of children volunteered at Loaves and Fishes Wednesday. They brought snacks, toiletries and bottled water to give to people who are homeless.
Tausha Smith and her cheerleading squad volunteered. At just 10 years old, these girls know what they are doing is important.
"It may make them feel happy that there's somebody that cares for them," Tausha Smith says.
For many of the recipients, just seeing the children's smiling faces is enough to lift their spirits.
Vernice Marine stays in a homeless shelter nearby.
"Oh, it's great, it's awesome," Marine says, "I'm telling you, because to know that kids have a heart for homeless people, that means a whole lot to us, too."
As an officer, Theragood sees what happens when children grow up without guidance. He hopes opportunities like this will help point these kids in the right direction.
