Nurse saves grocery store shopper during diaper run
GREENWOOD, IN (KTRK) -- Marcus Guajardo just needed to get a few things from the supermarket when he became a hero.
The critical care nurse from Greenwood, Indiana was shopping at the Meijer store, standing in line to check out, when another shopper collapsed to the ground.
Store employees rushed to help the man, and that is when Guajardo sprang into action.
"When I looked over there, I saw a gentleman, I just saw his legs," Guajardo says.
The man was turning blue and wasn't breathing, the nurse says. That is when Guajardo began chest compressions.
After a few minutes, the man's breathing returned and color began returning to the shopper's face.
The man was rushed to the same hospital where Guajardo works, and store managers thanked the nurse by paying for all his groceries, in addition to giving him a $25 gift card.
In a twist of fate, the nurse says he was about to leave the store moments before, but his wife called saying they had ran out of diapers. Without that call, Guajardo says, he wouldn't have been around when the man collapsed.
Guajardo says he was able to re-connect with the man he saved, who happened to be kept on the same hospital floor where he treats patients.
"Right away, he kind of got teary eyed and he said, 'Are you the one?' And I said, 'Yeah, I was there helping out at Meijer,' and he wanted to get up," Guajardo says.
The family embraced the hero nurse and thanked him for his quick actions.
