HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston Police officer battled Hurricane Harvey to rescue hundreds of Houstonians while waging his own personal battle against advanced cancer.

Officer Norberto Ramon was honored at one of the largest galas in Houston Saturday night.

Ramon has been with HPD's traffic enforcement division for years and was one of the first responders during Harvey who rescued people from floodwaters. He performed rescues as he continued to be treated for stage four colon cancer.

The gala is held to raise money for the Altus Foundation, which helps connect low income families and patients to premium healthcare.

It's the 16th year of the gala sponsored by ZT Financial, which is the parent company of Altus healthcare. Last year, $675,000 was raised which went to its non-profit healthcare assistance program.

In addition to Officer Ramon receiving a hero award at the event, the Houston Texans and Astros were also being honored for their contributions.
