HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Thousands of deserving Houston area children will receive an early holiday gift thanks to generous "elves" working with Elves & More.
Each bike starts in a box, but doesn't stay that way long. Santa's helpers were hard at work Saturday morning at NRG Center, assembling bikes for Houston area children, courtesy of the charity, Elves & More. They assemble more than a thousand bikes in one morning, and continue their work during the week, resulting in thousands of bikes for kids this holiday season.
Mike Walters volunteers year after year, and each time, the work takes him back to a special place.
"I've always loved bikes since I was a little kid. And I want to pass on that fun," said Walters.
These bikes are more than just gifts, they are rewards, earned by each child for setting educational goals. They receive a helmet to go along with the new ride.
"It has exercise and you like grow muscles, and lose weight and all that stuff," said volunteer Sophiea Talabi.
The volunteers themselves receive a little something too, which is not overlooked by Walters.
"It's a great cause, and everybody's having a great time. you don't see too many frowns out there," he said.
