What to bring to a meeting with a lawyer

When meeting with an attorney regarding your DACA, you will need to bring these documents, if they are relevant to you:

  • Current DACA work permit (EAD)
  • Social security card and State-issued ID
  • Birth certificate and Passport
  • Current mailing address where you can safely receive mail for the next 6 months
  • Previous DACA approval notices from USCIS
  • Copy of previous DACA application and Employment Authorization
  • If you traveled, proof of advance parole and all travel-related documents (such as passport)
  • If you have ever been arrested, you must bring arrest/court records
  • Two passport photos
  • $495 money order

When you hire an attorney, here are questions you should ask:

  • In what state are you licensed?
  • Have you ever been disciplined by a State Bar?
  • How long have you practiced immigration law?
  • What type of immigration law do you specialize in?

If the individual offering representation avoids your questions, consider finding a different lawyer. Call multiple attorneys before you hire one.

Remember, you are the client and you get to decide who will be represent your interests.

If you can afford to hire a private attorney, find an immigration attorney in the Houston area that is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Their website is at http://ailalawyer.org.

How to avoid Notario Fraud

A "notario" does not have specialized immigration knowledge or license to practice immigration law. Be wary if a provider does any of these:

  • Asks you to sign blank documents
  • Refuses to give you a contract for services
  • Refuses to show you their license of accreditation
  • Guarantees positive results
  • Claims a special relationship to an immigration official that will benefit your case
