HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's a busy weekend for parents and stores across the region as they prepare for the start of school.
Nobody ever wants to wait until the weekend before school starts to do their back to school shopping, but we talked to plenty of people who say that's just how things happened this year. And even though it's last minute, they're still looking for the best deals out there.
Eyewitness News spoke with some shoppers on Houston's south side. People were looking for all sorts of supplies.
"Folders, papers, pens, pencils, and note cards," says senior Rebecca Schultz.
"A backpack. She wanted Frozen, but we don't see any Frozen, so we're going to get Monster High," says Charlice Austin.
"We actually are moving our oldest into the University of Houston, so we're picking up things that we forgot," says mother of four, Amy O'Donnell. "But then while she's here, she's our youngest, she's in fourth grade. We're getting her a pencil bag and those little things she needs also."
Sisters Rebecca and Leah Schultz will share what they get and they'll be back.
"The teachers give us lists throughout the first week of school, so we'll probably come back in another week for what we really need," sophomore Leah Schultz says.
Charlice Austin is shopping for her kindergartener Dazani. She says she's learned how to shop around to stretch her dollar.
"The uniforms -- I got from here, and I ordered them off-line," said Austin. "So I got a deal for those off line with shipping. I think the most thing I spent was $25 for her Keds and I ordered those off-line."
Amy O'Donnell says they save money by holding on to supplies.
"We have four kids. It's not our first rodeo either. So we have quite a few at home that we recycle if we can and then special things like pencil bags, we'll get those again when we need to," said o'Donnell.
The store's assistant manager tells us the two weekends before school starts are about as big as Black Friday.
