Historic Houston church celebrates its 135th anniversary

The church welcomes the young and old into their community
There was a massive celebration at a church in Houston's Third Ward on Sunday, as Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist marked its 135th anniversary.

Abner Anderson, Jr., Chair of Deacons, said, "When we think of 135 years and where we started, from with a little shack over on St. Charles Street, a few blocks from here."

Led by a well-known roster of pastors over the years, Jordan Grove has grown in leaps and bounds. They even had to acquire land across the street to pave parking lots for all the people who come here.

The church feeds more than 300 needy people per week. They have athletic teams for young people and women's' circles for the less nimble, all in a community where 95 percent of the population lives in poverty.

"This is a positive thing for the community, to reach out to grab the youth and elders that are still with us," said church member Kendrick Brooks.

And today they pray for 135 years more.
