Gov. Perry indicted
Perry's political future could be in jeopardy after he was indicted on two felony charges linked to an abuse of power

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry must now turn himself to the Travis County Jail, where he will be booked, fingerprinted and have his mug shot taken. He was indicted Friday for allegedly abusing the powers of his office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption - making the possible 2016 presidential hopeful his state's first indicted governor in nearly a century.

A pre-trial hearing will be set in the next couple of weeks.

Perry is charged with a first-degree felony of abuse of official capacity and a third-degree felony of coercion of a public servant.

If convicted, he faces between five to 99 years in prison.

It's not yet clear how the charges will impact the governor's political future.

Perry still hasn't said if he is planning another run at the White House, but political experts believe he is laying the groundwork for a second presidential campaign after his failed effort in 2012.

Last weekend the governor was in Iowa - where the caucuses are considered a big indicator as to whether a candidate has a chance at the White House.

And in the coming weeks, he is scheduled to visit the early primary states of New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Experts say the indictment may not immediately hurt Perry's image with Republican primary voters.
