CHICAGO -- A Chicago animal shelter is asking for help to care for a kitten that was apparently set on fire.

The staff at Felines & Canines received a call Wednesday about a kitten in distress. They found the animal with burns so severe that doctors were not able to determine whether the kitten is male or female.

On Thursday, the kitten had been heavily sedated but was able to eat.

"He's comfortable, he's not in any pain whatsoever," said Abby Smith, director of Felines & Canines. "If he gets to the point where he's in pain or suffering then we'll euthanize him humanely. Until then, this cat has told us he'd like to try and survive."

Smith said the kitten may need to have a leg amputated. So far, the veterinary care has totaled $2,000.
