Houstonians' generosity keeps cat shelter from closing

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The people of Houston have come out in full force, donating enough money to save a local cat shelter -- and its 100 residents -- from eviction.

Earlier this week, the Kitten House Rescue of Houston on FM-1960 was given three days to pay more than $3,000 due in back rent or vacate their premises.

"We have spent every dime we have collected trying to keep the rescue afloat, but the rent continues to be our main stumbling point," wrote founder Debrah Rogers. "We are simply unable to raise enough funds to pay the monthly rent."

The shelter began a GoFundMe campaign to raise money, and surpassed its goal within 24 hours.

By Friday afternoon, 54 people had contributed $3,725 to keep the organization afloat.

"There are days I wonder why I do rescue work. My children think I am crazy, my checkbook knows I'm crazy, but my heart says it's not crazy to love," wrote Rogers after surpassing the goal. "Thank you for your blessings and I bid you all a 100 kisses a day."

Any additional funds raised will go toward future rent costs and animal care expenses.
