HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman crashed into a utility pole in southeast Houston, knocking out power to nearby homes -- and it was all in an attempt to avoid hitting a dog.

The crash happened around 2am on the Gulf Freeway Feeder Road near Monroe.

Police say she swerved to miss the animal and hit the pole. The accident caused an explosion and fire and knocked out power around the Monroe exit.

The driver was not injured, but unfortunately the dog was killed.

The driver wasn't sure if she hit the dog even after trying to avoid it or if someone else hit it. She will not face charges.

CenterPoint is working to restore power to a handful of people.
