A Lake Jackson police officer shot a burglary suspect Friday afternoon, police said.

LAKE JACKSON, TX (KTRK) -- Gunfire rang out in a Lake Jackson neighborhood early this afternoon, the conclusion of a police chase that began in Angleton and ended on Bayberry Court.

One woman was killed.

Blair Knox was helping his sister unload groceries in the family's driveway when he heard tires screeching at the end of the block. The dark sedan was followed by a procession of police cars, he said, with the Lake Jackson SWAT team bringing up the rear.

"They surrounded the car, and told me to go in the house," he said. "I went inside and looked out the window."

Knox said he heard police on a loudspeaker, telling the woman to get out of the car. "She laid on the horn, honking it for five minutes," he said. "I don't know why."

Police said earlier that the woman was armed, and after being stopped by officers, she had sped off. She was described as a wanted burglary suspect. Her male companion was taken into custody without incident in Brazoria County.

After minutes of negotiation, Knox said police tossed a "Flashbang" at the back of the car. The back window shattered and there was thick smoke.

Then, the shooting began. Initial police reports stated that she was armed and pointed the gun at officers.

"I couldn't tell if she fired first," he said. "There were so many shots. Police had A-R 15's, and the SWAT team was shooting. "

When the shooting ended, "I heard them calling for medical help. They pulled her from the car and used a defibrillator, but she was gone."

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect
