Woman Due in Court After 'Stupid' Disappearance Hoax Fails

A North Carolina woman is scheduled to appear in court today, the exact place authorities say she was trying to avoid when she allegedly faked her disappearance in an elaborate hoax.

Amy Arrington, 42, vanished Saturday. Her husband, Paul, told police that she disappeared after going in the water at North Myrtle Beach without him.

Lifeguards and rescue crews combed the waters, frantic efforts to save a drowning woman.

But police later said it was all part of a plot the couple hatched to avoid a court appearance. Amy Arrington was due to face a judge Monday on identity theft and forgery charges.

She now also faces one count of criminal conspiracy. Arrington turned herself in Wednesday, and is being held on $500,000 bond.

Paul Arrington turned himself in Thursday, charged with one count of criminal conspiracy and one count of making a false complaint to a law enforcement officer. He has posted bond on both counts and has been released.

Before turning himself in, Paul Arrington spoke to ABC affiliate WSOC-TV in Charlotte about his motives.

"I love my wife, and I'm going to do anything I can to protect her," he told WSOC. "We felt our backs were against the wall and we had no choice.

"It was a stupid choice, I mean very stupid, one that we both regret was made."
