DAYTON, TX (KTRK) -- A Dayton woman is facing charges after police say she hit and killed a 17-year-old who was walking along a road.

Pamela Markham, 42, hit and killed George Hathcoat, 17, near the intersection of PR 456 and FM 1409, police said. Officers added that when Markham hit Hathcoat, she first told police she thought she hit a deer, then called friends and family to come to the scene and take responsibility for the crash because she had reportedly been drinking.

A first responder with the fire department arrived at the scene and said the family was trying to get the story straight, then said Markham left the scene, leaving her friends and family to take the blame for the crash.

Markham later returned and admitted she was the driver, police said.

Markham was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid, and DWI, according to a police press release.
