Witness in poisoning trial testifies about kidney damage
Jurors heard from the doctor who treated Dr. George Blumenschein, who prosecutors claim his colleague Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo poisoned last year

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- As Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo is on trial, the lover and colleague she's accused of trying to kill is getting ready to testify against her as the prosecution presents its case.

Dr. Donald Maloney, who treated Dr. George Blumenschein after the poisoning, says his kidneys are only functioning at 43 percent.

"Does he have permanent impairment of his kidneys from what happened to him?" asked the prosecutor.

"Yes, he does," answered Dr. Maloney.

Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Blumenschein were involved in a sexual relationship while he was living with another woman.

Prosecutors allege that, on January 27, 2013, Dr. Gonzalez poisoned her lover's coffee with a component of antifreeze, and then went to work with him at MD Anderson.

Dr. Gonzalez says she's innocent.

Their colleague, Dr. Bonnie Glisson, testified to seeing Dr. Gonzalez walk to the hospital break room that afternoon.

"She was handling the mugs at the time that made me think they were empty," Dr. Glisson said.

Another colleague testified today that Dr. Gonzalez blamed Dr. Blumenschein's girlfriend for the poisoning.

"Oh, she was always convinced that was the truth," said Beverly Peeples.

If she's found guilty, Dr. Gonzalez faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
