Couple from Willis injured in San Antonio mall shooting

WILLIS, TX (KTRK) -- ABC13 Eyewitness News has learned two of the people shot and injured at a mall in San Antonio over the weekend are from Willis, in Montgomery County.

That shooting started as a robbery at a jewelry store and left a good Samaritan dead and more than half a dozen others injured. The two shooters are in custody.

The two victims are a husband and wife who both work for Willis ISD. Parents at the schools are shocked and say it's terrible that this shooting hit so close to home for this community.

Dr. Ivan Velasco and his wife Adrianna Velasco were among the injured at Rolling Oaks mall in San Antonio Sunday afternoon. Dr. Ivan Velasco is an assistant principal at Willis High School, while Adrianna Velasco works as an assistant principal at Meador Elementary School.

The pair were shot as the suspects in a jewelry heist tried to escape the mall. She was shot in the lower jaw and he was shot in the foot. Both were treated at a San Antonio hospital and released Monday morning.

They are resting in San Antonio with family before they return home.
