Green pond in NW Harris Co. has residents grossed out

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- At the West Houston Mobile Home Community in northwest Harris County on FM 529, residents say they've had enough of a trash-filled, intensely green-colored pond.

"It's horrible, no I'm sorry, for that pond to look like that," said Justin Rachal, who grew up there and still visits his family.

Residents say it's actually been like this for years, but just recently they started talking about it more in the online community, Next Door.

Richard and Rita Farias, of the American Latino Center for Research, Education & Justice, live nearby and perform non-profit work in the mobile home community. They also have concerns about the children playing nearby.

"All that junk, a kid could easily fall in there," said Rita.

We talked briefly with the property manager, who showed us a trailer loaded with trash; he claims the spring floods made the trash pile up. He says he's cleaning it in the next couple of weeks.

As for the green color, the Harris County Pollution Control Services assigned an investigator to look into the conditions, and believes it is Duckweed, which is not harmful to humans.

The Harris County Engineering Department also came out to take photos of what was going on at the private pond.
