Vets work to save dog
The dog was among dozens of animals seized last week

SANTA FE, TX (KTRK) -- Veterinarians at the Houston SPCA are still trying to save one of the most neglected dogs from the 101 they seized Friday from what they call deplorable conditions.

A 7-year-old female Irish Wolfhound has received two blood transfusions. She is emaciated, anemic and dehydrated. Workers have spent hours removing thousands of ticks from her body.

Two other dogs which were also seized had to be euthanized.

Investigators discovered the dogs along with two turtles, five tortoises, 14 parrots, two doves, four cockatiels, three cats, five chickens, five snakes and several macaws at the property in Santa Fe off Avenue R.

They tell us the animals were living among some that were already deceased, and that here was little in the way of food or water.

We are not identifying the property owner as right now there are no criminal charges filed in this case. No arrests have been made.

Public records, however, indicate there is or was a non-profit rescue group registered at the same address where the animals were seized. The group's name is listed as "Animals United Rescue Organization for Rehabilitation and Adoption."

The phone numbers for the group, however, have been disconnected. No one answered at the property Monday when we went there seeking comment.

A Harris County judge will decide whether any of the animals will be returned to the owner or if they will be allowed to be adopted. That hearing is set for Wednesday.
