Trooper ambush suspect in court after long manhunt

MILFORD, PA -- A suspect who led police on a seven-week manhunt after a fatal ambush outside a rural state police barracks appeared gaunt and battered at his arraignment.

Eric Frein answered yes or no questions but was not asked to enter a plea Friday to first-degree murder and other charges. He did not have a lawyer.

The 31-year-old survivalist had a bloody gash on his nose and abrasions on his cheek and above his right eye.

He is charged with killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson and critically wounding Trooper Alex Douglass on Sept. 12.

Authorities captured Frein on Thursday near an abandoned airplane hangar, ending a 48-day search through thick woods.

Prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty.

Frein remains jailed without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 12.
