The charred remains of her belongings can be found inside the home on Crestville Street at Southridge Street, near the South Loop.

The woman told Eyewitness News she had just returned home from work as a cook around 4am when she found her ex-boyfriend inside.

The man was supposed to have left her home with his bags packed by the time she got home. The fire victim says she told the man to get lost, and the next thing she knew, her living room was on fire and the man was running out the front door.

"A neighbor grabbed the water hose and was trying to put it out," she told us. "It was mostly out, but there was still burning underneath the sofa."

The woman was unaware meantime that a fire was burning in the back of the home. She thinks her ex may have also set fire to her bed.

The damage to the home is extensive. The walls show severe smoke and water damage, while the woman's belongings are completely destroyed.

Still, she says she's fortunate.

"I'm just going to put it in God's hands," she says. "The only thing that didn't burn was my Bible, and I thank God. My children could have been in there, I have two sons, because the way he set it, he wasn't thinking about nobody at all."

Again, the neighbor had to grab a garden hose to help, but it was too late. The fire was raging by the time firefighters arrived.

The good news out of all of this is that no one was hurt.

The arson police are working to issue a warrant for the woman's ex-boyfriend.
