Teen shot outside entertainment complex
A teen was shot last night and a nearby church steps up and want to reach out to teens to end the violence

STAFFORD, TX (KTRK) -- Calvary Church is just down the street from Main Event Entertainment Center, a popular hangout for teenagers. A shooting happened in the parking lot of that business Saturday night. As a result, members of the church are taking action in the community.

It happened at Main Event in the 12600 block of Fountain Lake Circle before midnight.

Pastor Britt Brooks called on his congregation to step up and reach out to teenagers in the area.

"What more can we do by way of our programs by our resources to help prevent things like that, like what took place last night from happening," Brooks asked, "So my first thoughts are, 'where are we failing, what can we do more to help reach them?"

There are hundreds of children who live in neighboring apartment complexes, who walk by the church to get to the entertainment center. Brooks said there are already two missionaries who live in the complexes with the goal of mentoring teenagers.

"When I was growing up there was a saying, idle time is a devil's workshop," Leah Shippy said, "So if kids are not busy, if people are not reaching out to them, then they're more likely to get into lots of trouble."

Trouble Saturday night could have cost one child his life.

"The adults, at some level, must get involved in the youth," Brooks said.

Church members hope to make a difference in the lives of neighborhood teens.

Stafford Police have not identified any suspects in Saturday night's shooting. The 14-year-old was taken to the hospital for surgery.
