HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We're learning new details of a young girl's heart-wrenching struggle after surviving a shooting earlier this month, allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.

While he sits in jail, the victim is now going through a long and painful recovery with her family there every step of the way.

Khiana Washington is relearning life; how to move and how to talk. She remembers the moment her world changed with a gunshot, fired by a jealous boyfriend and a relationship she was about to end.

"That's when he was like, 'You wanna play with me," and my head was down because I was texting and that's when he shot me," she said.

Nearly three weeks ago, she was shot in the neck, Her 17-year-old boyfriend, Eric Broussard, who she knew for years, is charged.

He fled Khiana's house, but not before she says he tried to cover up the crime. She had never lost consciousness."

"He was trying to hide my body," said Khiana.

Broussard was arrested. His own father turned him over to police. He's in jail. Khiana is now a patient at Memorial Hermann's TIRR center.

She asked that we not show her face, because of the device that holds her neck in place. Her family asked that we tell her story of jealousy that turns violent.

"Get a report or tell someone because you never know when they're going to act on it," said Aryn Guzman, Khiana's mother.

Khiana is proof that can happen and she's still trying to answer this question.

"Why would you shoot me if you tell me you love me?"
