HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A suspect is in custody after he barricaded himself inside the Sunset Inn Motel in southeast Houston.

Houston Police Department SWAT officers responded to the scene around 1pm Thursday. The motel is located in the 3500 block of Telephone Road.

According to HPD, the suspect assaulted someone at BreWingZ Sports Bar and Grill. When authorities found him at a nearby bus stop, he took off and pulled out a gun.

HPD spokesperson Kese Smith says the suspect pointed the gun at his own head and ran inside the motel, prompting the call for SWAT assistance.

"He said he wanted to commit suicide," Smith said. "So the officer backed off and begin negotiating with him over the loud speaking, giving him verbal commands to put the weapon down and just talking him through the situation."

Police were able to subdue the man before SWAT officers were needed.

No other details have been released.
