Students in hot water after standing on American flag in viral photo

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, PA (KTRK) -- A controversial photo is creating a firestorm on social media after a student was shown standing on an American flag.

The picture appears to be taken in a classroom with the male student and another female student.

The mother of the boy in the photo released a statement to WJAC-TV through the ACLU:

"My son did a stupid and impulsive thing. He apologized immediately and regrets what he did. We appreciate the people reaching out with understanding and forgiveness. Our family has the highest respect for our country and military and we would like to issue a sincere apology on behalf of our entire family."

Police and officials from the Richland Township School District are investigating to determine the next course of action.
