MILWAUKEE, WI (KTRK) -- Officials say a tractor trailer driver is blaming his GPS after he plowed through a public park Tuesday, heavily damaging two historic bridges in Milwaukee.

The 50-year-old driver from New Whiteland, IN, says his GPS said the park trail in Lake Park was a road.

The North and South Lion bridges, perched high above Milwaukee's shoreline, are historic landmarks built in 1898 by the famed park designer Frederick Law Olmstead, known for New York's Central Park. The damage, WISN reports, may be equivalent to breaking a museum piece.

The bridges are open to pedestrians, but the cost and extent of the damage is still being assessed.

The semi was removed from the park on Wednesday. The driver was cited with reckless driving and failure to obey signs.
