Reward increased in case of Houston man killed while protecting mother
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Earlier this week, Crime Stoppers offered an increased reward for information leading to the suspect who shot and killed a man trying to protect his mother during a robbery in southwest Houston.
Now, community leaders and the victim's family members have upped the reward even more.
James Weldon Ecford was fatally shot April 11 in the parking lot of the Condominiums on the Green on Sands Point Drive. Investigators say a robber tried to snatch his mother's purse and the 25-year-old intervened.
The suspect shot Ecford in the head then turned the gun on his mother, but missed her. He then ran toward a white 4-door sedan waiting for him and fled the scene.
Authorities released composite sketch of the suspect, who appeared to be between the ages of 27 and 32 years old. He's believed to have a hooked nose and was wearing a baseball cap at the time of the attack.
Between Crime Stoppers and family members, the reward was at $15,000. Today, Quanell X added another $4,000, bringing the total to $19,000 for information leading to the identification or charging of a suspect. However, Ecford's family is also pitching in some money, bringing the cash reward up to $15,000.
