Rash of car burglaries reported across Houston's south side

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- People living in two Houston apartment complexes woke up to quite the mess.

Glass from broken car windows littered the parking lot. Crooks smashed into at least 40 vehicles in the past 48 hours, according to property managers.

The crimes happened at the Cypress Creek Apartment Homes and Mariposa Apartment Homes at Reed Road near the South Freeway.

Residents like Nancy Davis told abc13 security needs to be buffed up soon.

"Lord have mercy, this has to stop," said Davis. "Somebody is going to get hurt eventually. If you break in our cars, you'll break in our homes."

Complex managers released the following statement to Eyewitness News:

"Cypress Creek Apartment Homes and Mariposa Apartment Homes at Reed Road in South Houston have experienced vandalism over the past 48 hours involving parked automobiles and broken windows. We have learned that this activity is widespread across south Houston including other apartment communities, businesses, and parking lots, along the 288 and Beltway corridor. The Houston Police Department is conducting a full scale investigation of this criminal activity in the entire 77051 zip code area. The owner and community management team of the Mariposa and Cypress Creek communities are working closely with and cooperating with the Houston Police Department. We are sharing information with the authorities to aid in the investigation. Our Community Management Team has reached out to the other community members, including businesses and apartment home communities, that were victims of this vandalism. Our team has brought help to monitor the community while the authorities are conducting their investigation. We are disappointed that this has happened and we hope the Houston Police Department can bring these criminals to justice. We, in turn, have reached out to our residents and will be working with them to help them in this time of need."
