abc13's Tom Koch reports from Washington D.C., where the pontiff will become the first Pope to address a joint session of Congress.

WASHINGTON (KTRK) -- Pope Francis will make history today when he becomes the first Pope to address a joint session of Congress.

It has been a warm welcome for the pontiff, who will make a 39-minute speech before lawmakers in English without a teleprompter.

The Pope's motorcade is the last chance for people to see the Pope in person in Washington D.C. Yesterday, tens of thousands of people turned out for the papal parade, some waiting more than 12 hours to catch a brief glimpse of the Pope as he made his way around the White House.

It was the day of the selfie, as someone called it. But people said it was absolutely worth the wait just to see the Pope, even for 15 seconds.

The Pope will make an appearance on the west side of the Capitol as it faces the National Mall. He will wave to the people before embarking on a trip to St. Patrick's Catholic Church to break bread and share lunch with the poor and homeless of Washington D.C.

Pope Francis's major focus around the world has been trying to lift up the poor, bring people out of poverty and bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.
