Police pursuit on Chicago highway results in 4 arrests
MARKHAM, Ill. -- Four people are in custody after leading police on a chase from Chicago to the south suburbs in the middle of the Wednesday evening rush hour.
A stolen SUV weaved in and out of traffic on the southbound Dan Ryan before getting on I-57. The SUV eluded police until it reached the south suburbs, near Hazel Crest's border with Markham at 167th and Kedzie.
DISPATCH: "Please run the plate yet squad?
DISPATCH: "Yeah, it's coming back stolen."
During rush hour, the suspects' stolen car was weaving in and out of traffic for 18 miles, at times speeding on the shoulder of the road. It all happened after Chicago police spotted the wanted car in Englewood.
DISPATCH: "Just [expletive] struck a squad car!"
DISPATCH: "Anybody injured?"
DISPATCH: "He hit our car. We're fine."
The wild getaway ended in front of a Hazel Crest car dealership.
"There were so many squad cars here. I've never seen anything like it," said Wally Fronek, an employee at I-80 Auto Sales.
Surveillance cameras at the dealership show the Ford Escape zipping by - and the police takedown. From the air, police could be seen arresting four suspects.
"When they were getting taken away they were just laughing, joking. One was trying to be noticed and be on Facebook and screaming his name out to the witnesses," said Greg Serafin, an employee at I-80 Auto Sales.
"They pulled a gun out of the car. They went into the glove box and they pulled a Glock out right away," Fronek said.
Luckily, no one was injured.
"I'm glad everybody is safe. The police are good," said Sami Sweiss, manager, I-80 Auto Sales.
The license plates on the stolen vehicle come back to an owner in Chicago. Police have not said when the vehicle was stolen. So far, police have not filed any charges.
