HOUSTON (KTRK) -- What began as an alleged aggravated assault -- a man pulling a gun on someone else in the Brazoria County town of Liverpool -- escalated to a chase into far southeast Houston and ended in a shootout.

When we say shootout, that's no exaggeration. Some 50 spent shells and casings were found on Krikmeadow Drive, off the South Belt.

Liverpool police chased the driver through Pearland. Police there joined in the pursuit.

The shooting began on the Beltway, according to a Houston Police spokesperson. The driver is said to have fired several shots out the window as he sped on the toll road.

The chase ended in a driveway, of the home where neighbors say the suspect lived. According to police, he fired a shot at a Pearland police officer. Fire was returned. The suspect was using a shotgun. When he ran out of shells, he grabbed a handgun from the truck. He survived the first hail of police gunfire. When he tried to run into the house, he was shot and killed.

So much gunfire was exchanged, that neighbors say police asked them for Solo plastic cups to mark the casings in the street and nearby lawns.

A contractor working on the home next door said he heard the shooting, which was likened to something out of a movie. "I heard 50 shots," said Reuben Aguirre. His estimate was later confirmed. A marker in the street read "50."

The name of the deceased suspect has not been released yet; however, neighbors describe him as being in his late 20's. The house where he lived is owned by his parents, who live elsewhere. A neighbor who asked not to be identified said he was quiet, was helpful, and helped foster dogs rescued from shelters.

He has an arrest record, with the latest charge dating back four years. Since then he's said to have lived a quiet life, or at least that's what the neighbors thought.

"He must have had an alter ego," one said.
