ABC13 has learned Gonzalez has a long criminal history.

He's a registered sex offender and was convicted of sexually assaulting a child in 2005.

Since then, court records show he's been charged with failing to register as a sex offender.

El Rey's brother, Dennisrey Gonzalez, says El Rey and Elva Gonzalez were having marital problems though the two had been married less than a year.

"He was under the assumption that she was having extramarital relationships and it just wasn't true," Dennisrey Gonzalez said.

He said his brother threatened Elva in the past. But Baytown police say they've never been called to the house for a domestic violence issue or any other reason.

Families of both Elva and El Rey say they never thought it would come to this.

"She was a very beautiful woman inside and out, had a big heart and soul and just loved life," Dennisrey Gonzalez said. "She was a godsend for my brother. I just don't know what the deal was."

El Rey is in jail. Murder charges are pending.
