HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A local man is thanking his tiny pet bird for waking him up when their apartment caught on fire in southwest Houston.

The two-alarm fire started around 11am at the Boca Springs apartments along Gessner near Westpark. One resident tells us that he was asleep when he heard the bird chirping.

"He was making all the noise so after I come out (and) everything was on fire, so I just come out jump out of the balcony that's it when I come out it was all on fire," said the bird owner.

No one was hurt by the fire. Six units did suffer fire, smoke, or water damage.

The cause of the fire is not known.
